Hitting Your Goals
What is a goal?
Dictionary.com defines goal as: The purpose toward which an endeavor is directed; an objective. To me, a goal is taking an objective, putting it down on paper, and doing everything within your means to make it happen.
It is NOT taking your past results and estimating what you will do in the future as long as everything remains the same and you don’t put forth any additional effort. That’s a guesstimate! A goal starts with the end result, and works backward, showing you what you need to do to succeed.
Secrets to hitting your goals
Why do we work harder toward the end of the month then we do at the beginning of the month. It’s only human to procrastinate a little. You know you have your whole month ahead of you, so why bust your butt now?
Pretty soon the end of the month is in sight and you’re not tracking to hit your goals. Now you have to work harder but guess what, you have call backs to make and not enough fresh leads to make it happen.
Pretend you were taking your family on a vacation to Disney World. In order to get there and back safely and have fun, you would have to do a lot of planning. You wouldn’t just hop in the car and see where you end up …; would you?
Your business is the same way. If you decide that you ARE going to hit your goals, then you must plan ahead and MAKE IT HAPPEN. Consistently successful sales reps play mind-games with themselves so they can improve their focus and level of concentration. This helps them hit their targets and achieve their goals. They do this by breaking down their large goals into much smaller ones.
So here’s an idea: Think of every week as if it were the end of the month. That will force you to stay focused on the work, tasks, projects and opportunities at hand. Do the things that generate great results, and stop doing everything else.
Create A Sense Of Urgency
Sometimes the goal is too far away to be meaningful. As a result, there’s no sense of necessity. We say to ourselves, “I’ve got plenty of time.” As a result, the calendar becomes our enemy.
This is the easy way to break down your goals and turn the clock into your friend:
- Take your annual goals and break them down into quarterly goals.
- Take your quarterly goals and break them down into monthly goals.
- Turn your monthly goals into weekly goals.
- Turn your weekly goals into daily goals.
- Turn your daily goals into morning and afternoon goals.
Here’s the secret! If you consistently hit your daily goals, you’ll automatically hit your weekly goals, etc, etc, etc.
Here’s the KEY question:
What activities do I need to be doing every morning and every afternoon to achieve my daily goals? Figure out what you need to do, and make it your routine. By developing good habits, you’re training yourself to be successful.
You can’t always control results. But you can manage your activities. When you do the right thing - day after day, after day - you get the right results. If you’re NOT getting the results you want …; do something different. Only a fool does the same thing over and over, expecting different results.
Create a plan ‘ with a step-by-step process ‘ and work the plan. The final step is to record your daily results on a spreadsheet and match them to your goals. With clarity of focus you’ll be much more successful. Remember: Aim high! If you don’t risk anything …; you risk everything!
